How often should I be cleaning Invisalign?

Once you’ve received your new Invisalign, the cleaning process will need to start as soon as you start using them. The control of potential bacteria they may store should be targeted as soon as possible for their longevity and cleanliness as well as your personal health.

Why clean your Invisalign

Even from the first day of use, your Invisalign should receive the same level of cleaning as your normal teeth. The reason for this is simple – to control and remove any bacteria which may be stored on the Invisalign itself.

Not cleaning Invisalign may result in the build-up of unwanted contaminants and cause bad breath as well as the Invisalign becoming discoloured, giving the yellowed look.

Looking clean may not mean they are clean

Some may be tempted to rinse the Invisalign thinking that since it looks clean, it must be clean. This isn’t however the case. Some bacteria, if newly stored on the Invisalign may show as clear, however, it will likely worsen over time causing yellowing.

The cleaning process

It is essential to ensure cleaning Invisalign is a regular task – daily in fact. Bacteria and unwanted items from the day must be removed. Typically, cleaning Invisalign is carried out during your usual teeth cleaning routine. It is highly recommended to use a soft bristle toothbrush for your Invisalign to make sure they don’t get damaged or scratched.

The typical nightly cleaning routine

  1. Removal of the Invisalign in order to commence the cleaning process.
  2. Rinse your Invisalign to remove loose debris.
  3. With a soft bristle brush and clear liquid soap, start cleaning your Invisalign as you would with your regular teeth.
  4. Thoroughly rinse your Invisalign to remove all bacteria.
  5. Once clean, store your Invisalign within a protective case.

If needed, there are also soaking options to ‘deep clean’ your Invisalign. Our professionals will be able to advise in this area if required.

Things to avoid

To reduce the chance of damaging or scratching your Invisalign, there are a few things we recommend to avoid in order to improve longevity.

  • Hard-bristle toothbrushes.
  • Denture cleaners.
  • Mouthwash – especially ones which contain alcohol.
  • Typical toothpaste.

Primarily, these areas may cause more issues than our recommended route of cleaning Invisalign. The cleaning process needn’t be a complicated process. Simple soft bristles and clear soap will do the job!

Invisalign storage

Whilst you’re not wearing your Invisalign, it is important they are protected. The use of a case ensures protection against bacteria and reduces contact with unwanted substances or materials.

Likely, your Invisalign will come with the protection case needed for their care. Along with the case, recommendations for further care will be provided by our experts.
